Some of you may be thinking that – given my background – it’s easy for me to talk about these issues. I’ve taught QuickBooks and other business, management and leadership classes for seven years at the college level. I’m an Advanced QuickBooks Pro Advisor, I’m on Intuit’s National Speakers and Writers Bureau and I taught Managerial Accounting at UNR to over 300 students a semester. Some of you may not know that I’ve owned my own businesses, managed a retail mall and restaurant, and worked for non-profit organizations both as an employee, a volunteer and a director. I often joke about my business mistakes — I never make the same one twice… But I have so many of them that I could publish a dictionary. Personally, I’m from the “Show-Me” state, and I’m one of those people that learns experientially. However, it is no joke — you must learn to run your business as a professional. I hope that others can learn from my mistakes and not make the same ones. Anthony Robbins has a saying about success. “Success comes from good judgment. Good judgment is the result of experience and experience is often the result of bad judgment.” I didn’t have a mentor or a coach when I was new in business and I paid the price. It is my heartfelt wish that you avoid the pain of such experiences. I now consult with business owners and managers of small to medium-size companies on how to use their records and reports to improve their companies’ profitability. As a business owner and an accounting instructor, I’ve seen how difficult it is for people to understand accounting, its terminology and its procedures. I’ve worked with hundreds of students and business owners as they struggle to grasp the basic concepts of setting of up an accounting system. Most knew that they needed to save all their documentation; and save it they did …usually in a shoebox. Or, they saved it by piling all papers in one corner of their office, or by allowing all the paperwork to accumulate on the corner shelf. Maybe if they ignored it, it would magically transform itself into a neat and tidy system, with reports that they could read and understand. My system didn’t evolve over night. In fact, I learned the hard way how to present accounting concepts in a step-by-step manner. Eventually, I hit on a system that breaks complex accounting concepts into bite size pieces, so that business owners can easily assimilate them into their business. The best part is that I am able to take this knowledge and experience and apply it to my clients’ businesses. So, this method has not only worked for me, but for others.
